Seasonal Crafting for Creative Sustenance
Autumn has at long last arrived. I began to anxiously count down the months till autumn, beginning last March. I become more contemplative than usual this time of year, as I reflect and imagine new creative pathways to follow.
In my reverie, I’m curating various projects from my favorite categories of stitching, writing and making. My curations will provide creative sustenance throughout fall and winter.
As I sort and arrange the bits and bobs of fabrics, threads and notions in the various baskets scattered about my atelier, I’m inspired by the colors, textures and myriad of ideas that begin to bubble up in my imagination. Arranging, sorting and curating are a cherished prayerful and life-giving practice.
My current writing project involves revisiting my one hundred plus journals for content to weave into my spiritual memoir. Recently, I’ve returned to an analog system of writing my notes on small colorful cards. These are arranged, according to content, in a wooden slotted holder on my work table. I prefer analog to the computer for the beginning stages of writing projects.
A cloudy weekend in late August inspired me to reorganize the closet where I store my collection of art supplies. When I spend time sorting and arranging my materials, new visions and inspirations for making begin to arise. My crafts of choice for fall are book-making, art journals and collage.
Today is a perfect first day of autumn, dark, cool and stormy. The leaves are beginning to change color ever so slightly. I am slowing down to savor every precious fleeting moment of this sacred season.
